Event 2 - Jayden Perry

EVENT 2 - Rita McBride: Selections from the Hammer Contemporary Collection

For my second event, I attended Rita McBride's, Particulates, in the Hammer Contemporary Collection. This exhibition captures the conjunction of water molecules, surfactant compounds, and the beams of high-intensity lasers that materialize as they interact with particulates of mist emitted into the air (
Philbin). When I first walked into the exhibit I was under the impression that the light from the lasers were pointed in their own specific ways to from the dimensional shape of light that can be seen in the pictures.
However, once I went home and read more about her display, I realized that the exchanges of gravity, water molecules, and laser beams forms this shape of an infinitely traversable space (
Rita McBride: Particulates). The mist from the water molecules were generated around the light from the lasers and some of the mist that wasn't trapped by the lasers made its way to the floor.

Rita McBride's work reminds me of the work Beautiful Chaos, and how light is used with mathematical formulas to make shapes that are visual for viewers. In Beautiful Chaos, the coefficients of a math equation and a chaotic cloud of particles ripples created a beautiful form of dimensional color (Selikoff). As Rita McBride added the form of water molecules and gravity, we can see home much art is evolving through time and through the advancements in technology and art.
