Medicine, technology, and art have all aided one another in discovering and documenting the human body in an accurate way. Through the early days of human dissection and drawing, we have shifted to greater advancements in technology which has shifted “our perceptions of our bodies.” (Vesna 2:07). We are now able to get actual scans of our bodies, as illustrated in Bodies Incorporated.Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen was credited with creating a portable x-ray device which he describes as a “mathematical designation for something unknown.” (Vesna 2:55). After X-Rays were created by Rontgen, MRI’s and CAT scans were developed which aided our knowledge on how to treat diseases and possible body breakdowns because we can see and what is going on in our bodies through these tests.
Even though our external bodies may look perfectly fine, there is much going on internally that we can only see through tests and scans. Because of this, “patients often feel unheard or unbelieved when sharing their symptoms, and the consequences can be catastrophic" (Artist + Digital Technologist Transforming Human Health). Being on the soccer team here I have seen a lot of my teammates injured and they don’t know what is hurt until they get an X-Ray of MRI. Most of the time, we can’t get an actually understanding of what is wrong until we use technology and its advantages.
The understanding of the body introduced also interested the idea of plastic surgery. The combination of “new forms of technology and plastic surgery came out of war” (Vesna 1:58), which isn’t really a shock but it is interesting to see how plastic surgery is mainly being used today. When I think of plastic surgery my mind goes to celebrities, mainly the Kardashians, and how they get a lot of work done on their bodies and faces to alter the way they look. Plastic surgery also takes on the form of botox which is used by men and women all over the world.

Hey Jayden!
ReplyDeleteWe dug into a lot in regards to the medical field this week. I was surprised to learn how recent the use of medical tools has been in use, such as the quote you mentioned, “mathematical designation for something unknown." A odd definition for an x-ray in terms of modern day technology. It was also interesting learning of the timeline of how plastic surgery began with war veterans to now the demographic of younger women.
